How to Verify an Oncology Nurse Certification

Verify OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) and AOCN/AOCNS/CBCN certifications through ONCC. Understand ONS/ONCC certification levels, renewal cycles, and a credentialing checklist for oncology and infusion nursing hiring.

Quick answer

ONCC certifications (OCN, AOCN, AOCNS, CBCN, BMTCN) are verified at oncc.org → Verify a Certification. Enter the candidate's name or certification number. Confirm Active status — OCN renews on a 4-year cycle. Also verify the underlying RN license through NURSYS or the state nursing board.

ONCC certification levels

ONCC offers a tiered certification structure spanning generalist and advanced oncology nursing practice:

Credential Full Name Notes
OCN Oncology Certified Nurse Primary oncology nursing cert; requires RN + 1 year oncology experience
AOCN Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Advanced practice level; CNS or NP with oncology specialty
AOCNS Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Specialist Clinical Nurse Specialist track; advanced oncology CNS
CBCN Certified Breast Care Nurse Breast oncology specialty; requires OCN or RN with breast care experience
BMTCN Blood and Marrow Transplant Certified Nurse Hematology/transplant specialty

Most oncology nursing job postings specify OCN or OCN-eligible. Roles in breast centers may require or prefer CBCN. Advanced practice oncology roles typically require AOCN or AOCNS alongside an APRN license.

ONCC verification

The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) maintains a public credential verification tool.

Verify ONCC certifications at: oncc.org → Verify a Certification (search by first name, last name, or certification number). The portal confirms:

  • Certification type (OCN, AOCN, CBCN, BMTCN, etc.)
  • Certification status (Active / Expired / Inactive)
  • Expiration date

OCN certification renews on a 4-year cycle. Renewal requires meeting continuing nursing education (CNE) requirements or retaking the exam. Always confirm status is Active and that the expiration date is current.

Underlying RN license verification

ONCC certifications require an active RN license as a prerequisite. Verify the RN license separately from the ONCC certification:

  • NURSYS: nursys.com — national nurse license verification for NLC compact states and many non-compact states
  • State nursing board: For states not participating in NURSYS, check the individual state board of nursing portal
  • Compact license states: Nurses with multi-state (compact) licenses can practice in any compact state; verify the home state license

An expired or inactive RN license invalidates the ONCC certification regardless of ONCC status. Confirm both separately.

ONS membership vs. ONCC certification

The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is the professional membership organization for oncology nurses. ONCC is the separate credentialing body. ONS membership does not confer or indicate certification. A nurse may be an ONS member without holding an ONCC certification, and vice versa. Verify only through the ONCC portal — not ONS membership records.

Verification checklist

  • 1. Verify ONCC certification at oncc.org — confirm Active status, certification type, and expiration date
  • 2. Confirm the certification level matches the role — OCN for staff RN, AOCN/AOCNS for advanced practice, CBCN for breast care roles
  • 3. Verify the underlying RN license via NURSYS or state nursing board — confirm Active, unrestricted status
  • 4. For APRN-level roles: verify APRN or CNS license separately in addition to AOCN/AOCNS certification
  • 5. Do not conflate ONS membership with ONCC certification — verify only through ONCC

Verify nursing program accreditation

Oncology nurses typically hold nursing degrees from ACEN or CCNE accredited programs. Use VerifyED to confirm a candidate's nursing program was properly accredited before accepting their credentials.
