How to Verify an AWS DevOps Engineer Professional Certification

Verify AWS DevOps Engineer Professional and SysOps Administrator certifications through the AWS Certification Verification Service. Covers Credly badge verification, 3-year expiration, specialty cert distinctions, and red flags for cloud hiring.

Quick answer

Verify AWS certifications through the AWS Certification Verification Service at aws.amazon.com/verification using the candidate's verification code. Alternatively, ask for their Credly badge link — all AWS certifications are issued as Credly badges with issuer “Amazon Web Services Training and Certification.” AWS certifications expire after 3 years and require recertification.

AWS operations and DevOps credentials

Certification Level Focus
AWS Cloud Practitioner Foundational AWS overview; no hands-on prerequisite
AWS SysOps Administrator — Associate Associate Operations, deployment, monitoring, management
AWS Developer — Associate Associate Application development on AWS
AWS Solutions Architect — Professional Professional Advanced architectural design
AWS DevOps Engineer — Professional Professional CI/CD, automation, monitoring, security at scale
AWS Security Specialty Specialty AWS security services and best practices

The DevOps Engineer Professional is one of two Professional-level certifications (alongside Solutions Architect Professional). It validates ability to implement and manage continuous delivery systems, automate security controls, govern access and compliance, and implement monitoring and alerting.

How to verify

AWS Certification Verification Service

  1. Go to aws.amazon.com/verification
  2. Ask the candidate for their AWS certification verification code — found in their AWS Certification account under “Share Certifications”
  3. Enter the verification code to view all active certifications associated with that account
  4. Confirm certification name, level (Associate/Professional/Specialty), and validity date

Credly badge

AWS issues Credly digital badges for all certifications. Verify at credly.com/badges/[id]:

  • Issuing organization: “Amazon Web Services Training and Certification”
  • Badge name must match the specific certification claimed
  • Check expiration date — AWS certs expire after 3 years

Recertification requirements

All AWS certifications expire after 3 years. Recertification options:

  • Pass the current version of the same exam
  • Pass a higher-level exam in the same domain — passing the DevOps Engineer Professional automatically renews the SysOps Administrator Associate if it's active
  • Passing any Professional or Specialty exam renews all Associate-level certifications

This renewal cascade means a candidate's active SysOps Associate might have been renewed by passing the DevOps Professional — check all active certs via the verification code for the full picture.

DevOps Professional prerequisites

AWS recommends (but does not strictly enforce) that DevOps Engineer Professional candidates hold either the SysOps Administrator or Developer Associate first. In practice, most employers treat the Professional level as a strong signal of operational depth.

A candidate claiming DevOps Professional without any Associate credentials is not impossible, but uncommon — worth asking about their learning path.

Red flags

  • Cannot provide AWS verification code or Credly badge — both are automatically available in the AWS Certification account
  • Certification expired — AWS certs have a 3-year window; confirm the validity date
  • Credly issuer is not “Amazon Web Services Training and Certification” — third-party AWS training badges exist and do not represent the actual certification
  • Confuses SysOps Administrator (Associate) with DevOps Engineer Professional — different levels, different exam requirements, different depth
  • Exam version mismatch — AWS periodically retires old exam versions (e.g., DVA-C01 → DVA-C02); older-version certs may still be valid within the 3-year window

Verification checklist

  • 1. Request AWS verification code from the candidate
  • 2. Verify at aws.amazon.com/verification — confirm certification name and level
  • 3. Check validity date — must not be expired (3-year cycle)
  • 4. Alternatively, verify Credly badge with issuer “Amazon Web Services Training and Certification”
  • 5. Confirm the certification level (Associate vs. Professional) matches the role requirement
