How to Verify an AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification
Verify AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) credentials through AWS Certification Verification and Credly digital badges. Understand Cloud Practitioner vs. Solutions Architect tiers and how to spot fraudulent AWS cert claims.
Quick answer
Verify AWS certifications through the AWS Certification Verification portal at aws.amazon.com/certification/certification-repo or via the candidate's Credly digital badge. AWS certifications expire after 3 years — confirm the certification is not expired. The Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) is the entry-level tier; do not conflate it with Associate or Professional level certs.
AWS certification hierarchy
The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner sits at the base of the AWS certification pyramid. Understanding the levels prevents over- or under-crediting candidates:
| Level | Certification | Exam Code |
|---|---|---|
| Foundational | AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner | CLF-C02 |
| Associate | Solutions Architect, Developer, SysOps Admin | SAA-C03, DVA-C02, SOA-C02 |
| Professional | Solutions Architect Professional, DevOps Engineer | SAP-C02, DOP-C02 |
| Specialty | Security, ML, Data Analytics, Networking, etc. | Various |
Cloud Practitioner validates broad conceptual understanding of AWS — it does not demonstrate hands-on architecture or engineering ability. For technical roles requiring actual AWS expertise, verify at minimum an Associate-level certification.
AWS Certification Verification
AWS provides a public certification verification tool. Candidates can share a verification link from their AWS Certification account.
To verify:
- Ask the candidate to share their AWS Certification verification URL or badge ID from their AWS Certification account
- Navigate to the verification URL — it will display the certification name, exam code, earner name, and issue/expiration dates
- Alternatively, verify via the Credly badge link if the candidate has shared it on LinkedIn or their portfolio
AWS certifications expire after 3 years from the date earned. A Cloud Practitioner certification earned in 2021 expired in 2024. Always confirm the expiration date — expired certs are a common source of credential misrepresentation on resumes.
Credly digital badge verification
AWS issues Credly digital badges for all certifications. When a candidate shares a Credly badge:
- Click the badge link to the Credly badge page
- Confirm the earner name matches the candidate
- Confirm the issuer shows Amazon Web Services
- Check the expiration date — Credly badges display both the issue date and the expiration date for AWS certs
- Confirm the certification name matches what was claimed (Cloud Practitioner vs. Solutions Architect, etc.)
Red flags
- Claiming “AWS Certified” on a resume without specifying the certification level — always ask for the specific cert name and exam code
- Presenting an expired certification as current — AWS certs expire; always check the expiration date
- Listing certifications from “AWS” training partners or prep course providers as AWS certifications — these are training completions, not AWS certifications
- Resume lists CLF (Cloud Practitioner) when the role requires SAA (Solutions Architect) — confirm the level
Verification checklist
- 1. Confirm the specific AWS certification name and exam code — Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) vs. Associate vs. Professional
- 2. Verify via AWS verification URL or Credly badge — confirm earner name and certification title
- 3. Confirm expiration date — AWS certs expire after 3 years
- 4. For technical roles: confirm the certification level is appropriate (Associate minimum for hands-on AWS roles)
- 5. Distinguish AWS official certifications from training course completion certificates — verify only AWS-issued badges
Verify computer science and IT degree accreditation
Cloud certifications complement degree programs but do not replace them for many technical roles. Use VerifyED to confirm that a candidate's CS or IT degree program was ABET-accredited or from a regionally accredited institution.
